Meeting the snow monkeys – Japanese journey through a winter wonderland-

OnAir February 9(Sun), 2014
snow_monkey_01During the cold winter months, these Japanese macaques are world famous as the snow monkeys who warm themselves in natural hot springs. It is a strange thought: Monkeys and humans both going for a dip in the hot spring. But why, curiously, do only females, young monkeys and elderly monkeys, and not males use the hot springs? At Jigokudani there are 160 monkeys.

The leader of this troop is the 15th generation leader, Dragon King Togura 95.
In this monkey troop, each generation of leaders is referred to as the Dragon King.

In human years, Togura is over 60 years old, and at four years into his reign will soon be facing retirement, yet no successor exists to replace him. What will happen to this line, threatened after generations of leadership? At the 50th anniversary of Jigokudani Wild Monkey Park (Jigokudani Yaen-Koen), we observe the Japanese macaques through the four seasons.

At the same time, we introduce the “omotenashi” hospitality of Yamanouchi Hot Springs and a journey through the natural wonders of Shiga Kogen highland.

Obuse town is located in Nagano prefecture of Japan which has a 400 years history of chestnut growing. There are old sweets shops in Obuse, and some still make the same sweets as 120 years ago, such as Kuriyokan which is a thick jellied dessert made of chestnut, agar and sugar. Other modern sweets like pies, pudding and steamed bun made from chestnuts can be bought in Obuse. Please have a look around the local sweets shops and try some! Obuse chestnuts are used for local cuisine as well, such as Kuriokowa which is steamed rice with a lot of chestnuts. Obuse has its own beauty, a townscape where time crawls along.
Please come to Obuse to enjoy special chestnut sweets you can only get here by Japanese patissier.
